Description:

This three credit graduate level course is designed to provide educators with an in-depth exploration of the behavior models and strategies that will enable them to maximize the on-task behavior of their students and better meet the Pennsylvania Academic Standards.  This is an online Moodle class, and each session contains a series of lessons, videos, written responses, and other activities.  This course is designed for teachers from K-12.  This course has no prerequisites or prior requirements.

Participants will be able to:
  • summarize and react to the class lectures and discussions by writing a journal entry for each session.
  • locate and write critiques of professional journal articles about concepts discussed during class sessions.
  • formulate a reaction in writing to the following statement: "What do you think is the most serious discipline issue facing our schools today?"
  • formulate a reaction in writing to the following statement:  "What is your position on the use of out of school suspension?"
  • formulate a reaction in writing to the following statement:  "What is your method of dealing with an irate parent?"
  • create a list of reasonable and doable classroom rules for their own classrooms, explaining why they chose these rules and why they are reasonable and doable.
  • write a lesson plan consistent with the Pennsylvania Academic Standards that they can take back to their classrooms to teach their students appropriate classroom behavior.
  • write a short paper in which they will describe a discipline situation they have faced and what discipline approaches they used, commenting on how, if the situation were to occur again, they would use the information they have learned so far in this course to more effectively deal with the situation.
  • identify five practices supported by research for dealing with discipline issues faced by most schools.
  • list characteristics and practices of effective and ineffective classroom managers.
  • list and identify techniques that research has found to help achieve effective group management and control.
  • define the role of the principal in effective school-wide classroom discipline.
  • identify the benfits of doable and reasonable classroom rules in maintaining an orderly and positive learning environment.
  • compare and contrast proven effective procedures for maintaining an orderly classroom and an orderly study hall.
  • list and identify teacher-caused discipline problems.
  • list and identify effective ways of dealing with difficult parents.
  • summarize and react to the course PowerPoint presentations by writing a journal entry for each session.
  • locate and write critiques of professional journal articles about concepts discussed during class sessions.
  • formulate a plan of implementation in which they will describe a discipline situation they have faced, what discipline approaches they used, describe how, if the situation were to occur again, they would use the information they have learned so far in this course to more effectively deal with the situation.
Credits:Three (3) PDE Graduate Level Credits
Graduate Level Requirement:
 
Act 48 requires 42 hours of instruction plus 48 hours of out-of-class activity including a course project.  Participants out-of-class assignments include but are not limited to:
  • complete activities that incorporate the Pennsylvania Academic Standards.
  • write a plan of implementation that will include several discipline strategies presented in this course.  The plan of implementation will state how these strategies can be used in their own classrooms.
  • read and summarize chapters in Classroom Management That Works: Research Based-Strategies for Every Teacher.
